Those who knew Tyler were inspired by his courage, and his insistence on enjoying life & spreading happiness despite the physical và emotional strain of living with cancer. Determined to lớn continue Tyler’s legacy of creating something positive sầu despite the odds, his family & members of the band Imagine Dragons (who had grown cthảm bại khổng lồ Tyler) came together lớn create the Tyler Robinson Foundation. Below is Tyler’s own story, penned just a few months before his passing. Some people say that Tyler lost his battle with cancer, but we couldn’t disagree more. The real battle is not whether you live or die, but how you respond to the challenge.
“My name is Tyler Robinson và I would lượt thích khổng lồ tell you my story.
When I was 11-years old I got a staph infection in my leg that went septic – the infection spread throughout my body toàn thân & my organs began lớn shut down. I spent two weeks in intensive sầu care at Primary Children’s Hospital on a respirator và had seven operations on my leg. I was fighting for my life and many people thought that I wouldn’t make it – but I fought hard và after five weeks in the hospital and five sầu months on antibiotics – I was cured. Last year, when I was 16 years old, I noticed I had a lump in my groin. I had been working out so I just thought I pulled my muscle; but it kept getting bigger. I finally told my mom about it and she took me lớn the doctor. After the biopsy I learned that I had a cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma. I was told that I had a racquetball-sized tumor near my bladder and that it had spread khổng lồ my lymph nodes và throughout my toàn thân. After a spinal tap they told my parents that my bone marrow was 95% full of cancer. My parents didn’t tell me that it was stage 4 because they didn’t want to discourage me. It seemed surreal at first, but I was OK with it. Then I went to meet with the doctors & they told me what I was facing. I needed khổng lồ have đôi mươi rounds of chemotherapy & it would take a whole year. I would also need an operation & six weeks of radiation. I would miss my junior year at Brighton High & some of my senior year. I rethành viên going home page & feeling so mad and depressed. I told my mom that I didn’t want lớn go through it – not a whole year of it.
Our local church leader came over that night & counseled with me. He told me that people who go through hard things either become bitter and angry, or they learn from it and become stronger. He told me that I had a choice to make. From that night on, I chose khổng lồ be the bigger man.
In February I had my first phối of scans và tests to lớn kiểm tra on my progress. My doctor came inkhổng lồ the room và told us that everyone was amazed that my tumor was gone and I wouldn’t need an operation. I still needed khổng lồ go through six weeks of radiation và to lớn continue chemotherapy until the fall. In June the tests showed that my bone marrow was completely clear of cancer. I am now officially cancer free and I will be done with my treatments next month.”
This year I’ve sầu learned lớn be patient and no matter how bad I felt, I pushed through the pain. I found that there is no use complaining or feeling sorry for myself – it doesn’t help anything. Always try to stay positive and have sầu faith.”
Tyler’s cancer unexpectedly returned just after writing his story and he passed only a few months later. But his optimism & zest for life stayed with hlặng to the kết thúc. He taught those who know và love him the power of positivity và its ability to lớn extinguish darkness even in the face of adversity. We hope that this Foundation can honor his example by reaching out to lớn lift up other children with cancer & the families who tư vấn them.
Tyler loved music, which was the catalyst for his relationship with the b& Imagine Dragons. One of his favorite lyrics during the time he was battling cancer comes from the song “It’s Time,” which says The path khổng lồ heaven runs through miles of clouded hell. When the b& heard about this, they dedicated the song lớn hyên at a show – this was the beginning of a long friendship.
